Leo Blokhuis

Leo Blokhuis

Leo Blokhuis (1961) considers himself more of a music lover than a pop professor, a title that is often attributed to him. He professes his love for music in his books, radio programs, TV programs, such as Top 2000 a Gogo, and in the theatre. His first novel, ‘Blue Summer’, was published in 2019, and his last music book, ‘Berlin, Musical Revolution’, was published in 2020. He also makes ‘Blokhuis de Podcast’ for the NPO every week, in which he tells musical stories. Leo likes to talk about music, illustrated with musical fragments and with a great eye for detail. The surprising origins of well-known songs, the broad lines in the development of music and the context of that music in time and social circumstances are often discussed. He moves at a fast pace through well-known and lesser-known songs and shows connections in music and society. For the TV programs he works for, he spoke with big and unknown artists, including Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Percy Sledge, Roger Waters, Je_ Lynne and Roger Hodgson, but in his radio program he also pays a lot of attention to new and emerging talent. In 2008 he won the Pop Media Prize for his ‘enormous knowledge of facts’ and his ‘love for the song’. In 2011 he won the Golden Tulip for the best informative book of the year with his book ‘The Sound of the Westcoast’.
